Got a chance to see Erik Larson, the author best known for The Devil in the White City, when he appeared at Centuries & Sleuths in Forest Park, Ill., last week. He's currently touring to promote his latest book, In the Garden of Beasts, a look at Nazi Germany over 12 months from 1933 to 1934.
If you have the opportunity, I'd highly recommend seeing Larson in person. He was engaging and interesting, and unlike many writers, didn't seem to approach it as a chore. He spoke about the new book, the research involved and how he got interested in the subject for more than an hour, answering plenty of questions. He also took the time, despite the large crowd, to talk to everyone and shake hands with every person who came up to get a book signed.
Larson still has a few more appearances in the Chicago area: Monday 5/23 at The Union League in Chicago and the Chicago Public Library; and Tuesday 5/24 at the University Club of Chicago and the Barnes & Noble in Skokie. To see Larson's full tour schedule, check out his website
